Concept art revealed for scrapped 1993 JP animated series

Date: Wednesday, August 19, 2015 - 17:45 (Eastern)
Author: Nublar7

An animated Jurassic Park series was originally planned following the success of the original film in 1993. Sadly those plans were canceled and the show never materialized. Artist William Strout, who was hired to do concept art for the series has revealed some of the work he did for the animated show.
"Towards the end of all of this merchandising I got a call from artist Will Meugniot, asking if I’d be interested in designing a Jurassic Park animated series. This was not going to be a kiddy show (although kids of all ages, including myself, could enjoy it). They wanted the show to be a mature prime time series with top writers and state-of-the-art television animation augmented with quite a bit of CG animation. Universal Cartoon Studios wanted a “graphic novel look” to the series. I came in, showed my portfolio and was hired.

“We made a trailer to communicate the look and feel of the series, also showing how we would combine computer animation with traditional animation. All we needed was Spielberg’s approval.

“I heard through the grapevine that he never bothered to watch what we had done. By that time the word was out that he was burnt out on Jurassic Park merchandising and all of the film’s commercial exploitation. So, it never got made.

Jurassic World made an estimated $1.247 million at the domestic box office this weekend to bring its estimated domestic total to $637.979 million. Internationally Jurassic World continues to do well in Japan and according to 'BoxOffice.com', Jurassic World is up to $968.3 million internationally and is now at $1.606 billion worldwide.

It becomes the 3rd film in cinematic history to cross the $1.6 billion worldwide mark. If it continues to do well in Japan, it also has the chance to become the 4th film all-time to make at least $1 billion internationally. That is something to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.

Jurassic World sequel to open early in UK

Date: Thursday, August 13, 2015 - 9:47 (Eastern)
Author: Nublar7

The official Jurassic World UK Facebook page has announced that the Jurassic World sequel will hit UK cinemas on June 7, 2018. As of this moment it means that the UK will receive the sequel two weeks before the United States and Canada, which is scheduled to open the film on June 22, 2018.

While it is possible that these dates stick, it would not be surprising if this is the first domino to fall in a shake up of Universal and Legendary's 2018 schedule. Currently Godzilla 2 is scheduled to hit domestic theaters on June 8, 2018 and UK cinemas on June 18, 2018. Would not be surprising if eventually the domestic release for the Jurassic World sequel gets moved to June 8th to coincide with its international release and Godzilla 2 is rescheduled for a different date.

Dave Lowery's Storyboards For Jurassic World

Date: Monday, August 10, 2015 - 17:53 (Eastern)
Author: Nublar7

Artist Dave Lowery, who has worked as a storyboard artist on all four Jurassic Park films, has uploaded to his website some illustrations he did for Jurassic World.

What is interesting about the storyboards is that it appears to be from an earlier version of the script and not for the final product we saw on screen. It is our guess that these storyboards are either based on the Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa script, or Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly's first revision prior to production being halted in May of 2013.

The most notable difference is that the main dinosaur is not called the Indominus Rex, but instead "Malasaurus". Previously we reported on an interview Trevorrow did where he stated that the main dinosaur in the Silver and Jaffa script was not going to be a hybrid but instead a made up in-universe dinosaur that had remains found in China. It would make sense that this made up dinosaur was probably called "Malasaurus" in the original version.

Some other notable scenes that had storyboards created that didn't show up in the final version included more looks at different attractions around the park like the "Pachy Arena", "Brachiosaur Valley", a T-Rex hunting show that included Gallimimus, and a Velociraptor ride called the "Raptor Den". The Mosasaurus also had an action sequence that involved the monorail, and there were more aquatic reptiles like the Plesiosaurus and Ichthyosaurus.

While future sequels likely won't involve an open park anymore, it is possible that some of these concepts could be included in future installments. For example the Spinosaurus/boat scene was an idea from the original novel(though it involved the T-Rex) that was incorporated in the 3rd film. For the original film, there was going to be a scene that involved Lex riding a baby Triceratops, and that idea finally made it to the big screen in Jurassic World during the petting zoo scene. So don't be surprised if the next sequel has an action sequence involving a Plesiosaurus or Ichthyosaurus.
